Does anyone know how to stop Mac from converting a text file to a Word document? It's only on one text file and I can't figure out why it happens. I've recreated the file a few times in Textedit and it's ok for awhile and then suddenly opens in Word. Specify text direction in a shape, text box, or table cell Enter the text in the shape or text box or table cell, and then select the text. Ctrl+Click the selected text, and then click Format Shape.
There may be times when you want to change the direction of text in Word. This is easily done using text boxes or shapes or using cells in a table. We will show you both methods for changing the direction of text.
Change the Direction of Text in a Text Box or Shape
To change the direction of text using a text box or shape, insert a text box using the Text Box tool in the Text section of the Insert tab or a shape using the Shapes tool in the Illustrations section of the Insert tab. Enter text into the text box or shape. Make sure the text box or shape is selected and click the Format tab under Drawing Tools.
In the Text section of the Format tab, click Text Direction and select an option to rotate the text. Symbols next to the options show you how the text will display after applying each option.
The text is rotated and the text box is reshaped accordingly.
You can also select Text Direction Options from the Text Direction drop-down menu to rotate text.
Select an Orientation on the Text Direction dialog box. A Preview displays on the right side of the dialog box. Click OK to accept your selection.
Change the Direction of Text in Table Cells
You can also change the direction of text in one or more table cells. To do so, select the cells for which you want to change the text direction and click the Layout tab under Table Tools.
Click Text Direction in the Alignment section of the Layout tab.
Each time you click Text Direction, a different direction is applied. Keep clicking the button until the desired direction is applied.
You can also right click on the selected text in the table cells and select Text Direction from the popup menu to change text direction in a table.

If you have a spreadsheet where the text in your column headings (not the lettered column headings) is longer than the text in the columns, and there are a lot of columns, you may want to rotate the text in your headings so the columns become narrower.
NOTE: We used Excel 2013 to illustrate this feature.
This also allows you to fit more columns of data in a smaller area. To rotate the text in cells, first highlight the cells you that contain the text you want to rotate. Make sure the “Home” tab is active and click the “Orientation” button in the “Alignment” section of the “Home” tab (the button with the slanted text). Select an option to rotate the text. The icons to the left of the options show which way the text will rotate.
The text is rotated in the chosen direction in the selected cells.
How To Find Text Direction On Word
For more fine-tune control when rotating your text, highlight the cells containing the text you want to rotate and click the “Alignment Settings” button in the lower-right corner of the “Alignment” section of the “Home” tab.
The “Format Cells” dialog box displays. The “Alignment” tab automatically displays. To rotate the text, click on any point along the semicircle in the “Orientation” box. The number of degrees of the rotation displays in the “Degrees” edit box. If you know the specific number of degrees you want to rotate the text, type the number directly into the “Degrees” edit box, or use the spinner arrow buttons to select a number.
If you want the text to be vertical in a cell (each character takes up one line), click the box to the left of the semicircle angle box in the “Orientation” but (the box with the word “Text” in a vertical format). The button turns black to show that the option is on and your text will look like the first cell in the image below once you click “OK” on the “Format Cells” dialog box.
To reverse the rotation of your text and display it normally, simply go back to the “Alignment” tab on the “Format Cells” dialog box and enter “0” (that’s a zero, not the letter “O”) in the “Degrees” edit box. To reverse vertical text, simply click the vertical text button on the “Alignment” tab so the button is not black.
