  • Oct 15, 2017  Avenir was the first font I selected in Outlook Preferences for my plain text font a year or more ago. I have repeatedly un-installed and re-installed Outlook, changed the Preferences.
  • In Outlook, Click on the Tools menu, the Options item, and then click on the Mail Format tab. Make sure that the dropdown next to Compose in this message format: is set to Plain Text.

In Outlook 2007 and newer, you can change the fonts used for reading plain text messages from the Stationery and Fonts dialog in Options. The middle two options, for New mail messages and Replies and Forwards, controls the default fonts used for HTML and RTF messages and apply only to messages you send.

People who got the wrong outlook on life

I have had this issue with several versions of Outlook for Mac. I previously posted and tried the workarounds suggested in this Sep 2016 thread. The problem has persisted though, and I'm wondering if anyone has any new ideas, or if my more detailed description below helps triangulate the issue.

I am running the most current build (Version 15.39 -- 171010) of Outlook for Mac via my Office 365 for business subscription on a totally up-to-date MacBook Pro 15 USB-C with High Sierra. I religiously keep everything up to date.

I still have the same problem. No matter what font I have specified in Outlook > Preferences > Fonts, whenever I launch the Print dialog and either save to a PDF (using either built in Apple PDF engine or the most current version of Adobe Acrobat engine) or actually send it to a printer, my plain text email body content gets printed as Avenir Next, not as what's selected in Outlook Preferences. Avenir was the first font I selected in Outlook Preferences for my plain text font a year or more ago.

I have repeatedly un-installed and re-installed Outlook, changed the Preferences > Font selection, etc. The issue is persistent.

TextFont

Here is a detailed walk-through of the problem with screen shots.

1. Garamond size 12 is set as my preferred font in Outlook preferences for plain text.

2. I sent a plain text email to myself. Both in the compose window and in the reading window, it properly shows up at Garamond size 12.

3. When I print the email from sent items, the Print Preview shows the Garamond body text being converted into Avenir Next.

4. And the resulting PDF (or hard copy print if sent to any external printer) has indeed converted the body text from Garamond (or whatever other font is specified in my Outlook > Preferences > Fonts > Plain Text) into Avenir Next.

Note: If I compose in HTML, this problem goes away. In other words, if I compose in Garamond in HTML formatted email, then when I open the sent item and print it, the font will correctly print/PDF as Garamond. Obviously, composing in HTML is a workaround to have more control over how my messages print, but I'm confused as to why this error happens only in Plain Text, which I would prefer to normally compose and receive in.

Thanks for help with any new ideas to try, or if you are having the same problem please reply and let me know if there are more of us with this problem.
