InDesign, on the other hand, has no such button and will not simulate a bold version of the font does not exist; to make text thicker, you need to either select the bold version of the font manually or apply a stroke to it. Press “Ctrl-B” on your keyboard to make the text bold, which will automatically make it a little thicker. In InDesign, you don’t have a button for bold text and need to use a keyboard shortcut.
UseBaseline Shift to move a selected character up or down relativeto the baseline of the surrounding text. This option is especiallyuseful when you’re hand-setting fractions or adjusting the positionof inline graphics.
- In the Character panel or Control panel, type a numericvalue for Baseline Shift . Positivevalues move the character’s baseline above the baseline of the restof the line; negative values move it below the baseline.
Note:
To increase or decrease the value, clickin the Baseline Shift box, and then press the Up or Down Arrow key.Hold down Shift while you press the Up or Down Arrow key to changethe value in greater increments.
To change the defaultincrement for baseline shift, specify a value for Baseline Shiftin the Units & Increments section of the Preferences dialogbox.
Make characters superscript orsubscript in a non-OpenType font
- Choose Superscript or Subscript in the Character panelmenu or in the Control panel.
When you choose Superscript or Subscript, a predefinedbaseline shift value and type size are applied to the selected text.
Thevalues applied are percentages of the current font size and leading,and are based on settings in the Type Preferences dialog box. Thesevalues do not appear in the Baseline Shift or Size boxes of theCharacter panel when you select the text.
Note:
You can changethe default size and position of superscripts and subscripts usingAdvanced Type preferences.
The default weight of an underline and strikethroughdepends on the size of the type.

- Choose Underline or Strikethrough in the Character panelmenu or the Control panel.
Creating custom underliningis especially useful when you want to create an even underline belowcharacters of different sizes, or for creating special effects, suchas background highlighting.
- From the Character panel menu or the Control panelmenu, choose Underline Options or Strikethrough Options.
Select Underline On or Strikethrough Onto turn on underline or strikethrough for the current text.
For Weight, choose a weight or type a value to determinethe thickness of the underline or strikethrough line.
For Type, select one of the underline or strikethroughoptions.
For Offset, determine the vertical position of theline. The offset is measured from the baseline. Negative valuesmove the underline above the baseline and the strikethrough belowthe baseline.
Select Overprint Stroke when you want to make surethat the stroke doesn’t knock out underlying inks on a printingpress.
Choose a color and tint. If you specified any linetype other than solid, choose a gap color or gap tint to changethe appearance of the area between dashes, dots, or lines.
Select Overprint Stroke or Overprint Gap if theunderline or strikethrough will be printed over another color, andyou want to avoid errors that can occur with printing misregistration.
Note:
To change the underline or strikethroughoptions in a paragraph or character style, use the Underline Optionsor Strikethrough Options section of the dialog box that appearswhen you create or edit the style.
InDesign can automatically insert ligatures,which are typographic replacement characters for certain letterpairs, such as “fi” and “fl,” when they are available in a givenfont. The characters that InDesign uses when the Ligature optionis selected appear and print as ligatures, but are fully editable,and do not cause the spell checker to flag a word erroneously.
With OpenType fonts, when you choose Ligatures from the Character panel menu, Control panel menu, or in-context menu, InDesign produces any standard ligature defined in the font, as determined by the font designer. However, some fonts include more ornate, optional ligatures, which can be produced when you choose the Discretionary Ligatures command.

You can also apply a gradient to text by dragging acrossthe selected text using either the Gradient Swatch tool orthe Gradient Feather tool .
Note:
To create reverse type, you can change the textfill color to white or [Paper] and the frame’s fill color to a darkcolor. You can also create reverse type by using a paragraph rulebehind text; however, if the rule is black, you’ll need to changethe type to white.
Use the Effects panel to add transparencyeffects, such as drop shadows, to text.

You can choose Object if you want the effects you chooseto apply to the text frame’s stroke and fill as well as the textinside it.
If you want to change the text’s blending mode or opacitysettings, make these changes on the Effects panel.
Assigning a language to text determines whichspelling and hyphenation dictionary is used. Assigning a languagedoes not change the actual text.
To apply the language only to selectedtext, select the text.
To change the default dictionary used in InDesign,choose the language with no documents open.
To change the default dictionary for a specificdocument, open the document, choose Edit > DeselectAll, and then choose the language.
- In the Character panel, choose the appropriate dictionaryin the Language menu.
InDesign uses Proximity (and WinSoft for some languages)dictionaries for both spelling and hyphenation. These dictionarieslet you specify a different language for as little as a single characterof text. Each dictionary contains hundreds of thousands of wordswith standard syllable breaks. Changing the default language doesnot affect existing text frames or documents.
You can customizelanguage dictionaries to ensure that any unique vocabulary you useis recognized and treated correctly.

The All Caps or Small Caps commands changethe appearance of text, but not the text itself. Conversely, theChange Case command changes the case setting of selected text. Thisdistinction is important when searching or spell-checking text. Forexample, suppose you type “spiders” in your document and apply AllCaps to the word. Using Find/Change (with Case Sensitive selected)to search for “SPIDERS” will not find the instance of “spiders”to which All Caps was applied. To improve search and spell-checkresults, use the Change Case command rather than All Caps.

InDesigncan automatically change the case of selected text. Whenyou format text as small caps, InDesign automatically uses the small-cap charactersdesigned as part of the font, if available. Otherwise, InDesign synthesizes thesmall caps using scaled-down versions of the regular capital letters.The size of synthesized small caps is set in the Type Preferencesdialog box.
Ifyou select All Caps or Small Caps in an OpenType font, InDesigncreates more elegant type. If you’re using an OpenType font, youcan also choose All Small Caps from the Character panel menu orthe Control panel. (See ApplyOpenType font attributes.)
- Choose All Caps or Small Caps in the Character panelmenu or in the Control panel. If the text was originally typed inall caps, selecting Small Caps will not change the text.
- ChooseEdit > Preferences > Advanced Type (Windows)or InDesign > Preferences >Advanced Type (Mac OS).
- For Small Caps, type a percentage of the original fontsize for text to be formatted as small caps. Then click OK.
- Choose one of the following in the Type >Change Case submenu:

The Sentence Case command assumes that the period (.),exclamation point (!), and question mark (?) charactersmark the ends of sentences. Applying Sentence Case may cause unexpectedcase changes when these characters are used in other ways, as inabbreviations, file names, or Internet URLs. In addition, proper namesmay become lowercase when they should be uppercase.
Youcan specify the proportion between the height and width of the type, relativeto the original width and height of the characters. Unscaled characters havea value of 100%. Some type families include a true expandedfont, which is designed with a larger horizontal spread thanthe plain type style. Scaling distorts the type, soit is generally preferable to use a font that is designed as condensed orexpanded, if one is available.

Scale text by resizing the textframe in InDesign
Using the Selection tool, hold down Ctrl(Windows) or Command (Mac OS), and then drag a corner ofthe text frame to resize it.
Using the Scale tool , resizethe frame.

When you change the scale of a frame, thetext inside the frame is also scaled. For example, when you doublethe size of a text frame, the text also doubles in size; 20-pointtext increases to 40 points.

Youcan change a preferences option to indicate how scaled text appearsin panels:
By default, with Apply To Content selected,the Font Size boxes in the Control panel and Character panel listthe new size of text (such as 40 pt). If you select the Adjust ScalingPercentage option, the Font Size boxes display both the originaland the scaled size of the text, such as “20 pt (40).”
The scaling values in the Transform panel tell you the horizontaland vertical percentage by which the frame was scaled. By default,with Apply To Content selected, scaling values display at 100% aftera text is scaled. If you select the Adjust Scaling Percentage option,the scaling values reflect the scaled frame, so doubling the scaleof a frame displays as 200%.
Tracking scale changesto frames is useful if you have to revert a frame and the text insideit to their original size. It’s useful as well for finding out byhow much you changed the size of a frame. To track scale changesto frames and the text inside these frames:
ChooseEdit > Preferences > General (Windows) orInDesign > Preferences > General (Mac OS).
Select Adjust Scaling Percentage, and then click OK.
The Adjust Scaling Percentage preferenceapplies to frames that you scale after the preference is turnedon, not to existing frames.
The Adjust Scaling Percentage preference stays with the text.The scaled point size continues to appear in parentheses even ifyou turn off the Adjust Scaling Percentage preference and scalethe frame again.
To remove the scaled point size from the Transform panel,choose Redefine Scaling as 100% in the Transform panel. Choosingthis option doesn’t change the appearance of the scaled frame.
If you edit the text or scale a frame within threaded frameswhen the Adjust Scaling Percentage preference is selected, the textis scaled, even if it moves to a different frame. However, if ApplyTo Content is selected, any text that flows to a different frameas a result of editing is no longer scaled.
- In the Character panel, type a numeric value for Skewing . Positivevalues slant type to the right; negative values slant type to theleft.
Note that applying an angle to type does not producetrue italic characters.

Sometimes, to get the effect that you want inInDesign, you have to cheat it a little bit.Let me show you a couple of my favorite cheatshaving to do with making fake bolds and fake italics.You might be coming from a background of fake bolds and fake italics are goingto print horribly, they are going tobe all pixelated, they're going to look stupid.While they won't be pixelated, they might look stupid, but they won't be pixelated.Because all we're doing is we aredoing some transforms or some strokes to postscriptpaths, just like any shape, that's what we're going to be doing with our type.
Let's say, for example, that in this pull quote here, I like reading e-mail.As long as it's an interesting e-mail.Well, you heard how I put some emphasis oninteresting, so I'd like to make this word interesting italic.So I double-click the word, go to my font menu, and no italic.So, this might happen, or often happens to me when you're working with dingbats.You want to make an italic dingbat for some reason,usually they don't have italic or bold or bold italic.So, how do you fake an italic?This is probably the easiest one to do, select theword and then, up here in the control panel, ifyou are in character mode, if you see the fontthen you are in character mode, you'll see a skew.
Look they even added false italic here.I think that's new in the tool tip.Interesting.So with it selected, you can go ahead and type in some sortof angle here and now it's fully endorsed here by Adobe, I guess.I'm going to type in, usually 15 degrees or 20 degree would work.If you press Shift+Enter or Shift+Return rather thanReturn, you can keep the field in focus.So, you can try different settings, so that's 20, so if I type15 Shift+Enter, that's a little less, that looks pretty good, I like that.
There we go, some fake italic where there was no italic before.Let's make this back to zero and say that we want it tobe bold, of course, you can combine italic and bold, if you wanted to.To make something bold usually involves fattening up the type,which means you have to add a stroke to it.Now, depending on the font, sometimes, you can get awaywith simply adding a stroke right from the swatches panel.Or, of course, it's also available up here in the control panel.So, here, let's just do it right from here.So, there's usually no stroke on type.
It just has a fill.But I am going to give it a stroke and I amgoing to give it a stroke of the same color as the fill.So, if it's black type, you give it a black stroke.This is this beautiful orange color.Now, with this particular font, it looks pretty horrendous.Well, maybe, it's really gumming up over here in the Gs but I guessyou'd call it black or as, as, as opposed to bold or ultra bold.It's a little too much.So, if adding a stroke of the same color doesn't do it for you,then Undo, and you can get finer control if you convert the type to outlines.

That way you have the ability to apply astroke, but add a stroke of your own choosing.However wide you want that stroke to be.To convert type to outline select it and thengo to the Type menu and choose Create Outlines.That changes it from editable type into a filled shape, and you cansee the filled shape if you select it with the Direct Selection tool, see?But it looks exactly the same, and it'll print exactly the same.They have grouped all of those shapes and then pasted it in.
I'm going to quick write on it with the Selection tool as an anchored object.Now we can go ahead and apply a stroke to everything inside this anchored object.So, I'm going to come here and say, I want to apply a stroke.And now we have this field lights up where I can actually change the stroke weight.And even that looks really good, doesn't it, at one point stroke?Doesn't look bad, but let's say that I wanted it a little bit thinner.Let's try 0.5 stroke, nice.Now, let's say that I also wanted to alsomake this italic, how would you make it italic?Well, you could've started out by making ititalic with the Skew command and then converting itto outlines, but you can also skew this, wellnow it's called Shearing, when you shear an object.

We're going to shear this.You can shear something with the Shear tool.I bet you didn't know there's a shear tool.Yes, there it is.You could also do it with the Free Transform tool.If you start dragging with the Free Transform tool, and then hold downthe Cmd on the Mac or the Ctrl on PC as you drag.But it's a little hard to control.You see what's happening here?If you hold down the Shift key, then you get this kind of crazy effects.So, I'm just going to undo all that and insteadgo back, select this guy with the Selection tool.And let's do it numerically from the Object menu.
Go to Object>Transform and choose Shear.And now we can go ahead and say we want to Shear it on the horizontal axis.Make sure that preview's turned on.And let's try 15 degrees again.That looks good.So now we have a bold italic.Pretty good, fake bold and italic, if I say so myself.It's not quite as convenient as having a bold, italic and abold italic versions of the typeface, but there are so many facesout there that don't have those, it's really great to know howto do a fake bold and italic when the situation calls for it.
